| About Ndadaye Day |
| Mr. Ndadaye is first Hutu President of Burundi. He was a co-founder of the powerful Democratic Front of Burundi, a mostly Hutu political party. He had tried to create a broad-based Government. He cautiously tried to dilute Tutsi control in the security forces and find ways to repatriate hundreds of thousands of mostly Hutu refugees living abroad. Mr. Ndadaye, a 40-year-old banker, had been in office for only 100 days when he was killed on October 21, 1993, along with several ministers and Government officials. Hutus make up more than four-fifths of the population of Burundi. His triumph in the country’s first free elections after 26 years of military rule marked the end of centuries of domination of the Hutu. For many people from Burundi, a day like October 21 exhumes very painful memories. |
