| The people in Bujumburu, Burundi’s capital marked “Unity Day”. It is celebrated on February 5th of each year. Burundi people voted in a referendum to abolish ethnic hated and the creation of a new constitution. The people voted in favour of its about 88 percent then the president, Pierre Buyoya was declared that the February 5th is known as “Unity Day” of Burundi. In this day the country leaders, past and present, gathered at Bujumbura's "Peace Monument", which was erected on the same day in 1992. This day was no different from others, as they went about their daily activities. Burundi's government, controlled by the National Counsel for the Defence of Democracy, and the last active rebel movement Forces for National Liberation signed a deal to end all hostilities on December 4, 2008. |
