| March 1st is the most important, Intrinsic and a unique holiday for the Bulgarians. The custom and tradition of this event is "Wearing martenitsas" (red-and-hite threads worn as a decoration). It is celebrated with a positive thought by the Bulgarians. The event is associated and related to the positivism and hopefulness of warmer weather, fertility of land and well-being of the people of the country. This traditional event is mainly celebrated on the basis of the formation of Bulgaria in 681 AD. This traditional holiday is called Baba Marta (or Grandma Marta in English) and is related to welcoming the approaching spring. The old people of Bulgaria called this month as "birch month" the reason is, the birch tress begins to grow leaves. The other predictions which are related to this event are youngsters are made to meet the willful old woman early in the mornings of this month. The Bulgarians believe that, if the old lady is smiling and merry the weather will be good and sunny. Also, Bulgarians in march may not be interested to cut their hair, so that she does not "cut" their brains and they become stupid. Every year on March 1st in the morning, Bulgarians will set the fire in their compounds of their houses with full of smoke and then people starts jumping pon the fire thrice looking up the rising sun, in order to protect them from the evil spirits and get healed from the diseases. The lady of the house takes out some red colored fabrics and put them on the tree branches and on the fence in the yard. After that only she starts decorating her children and their domestic animals with martenitzas which is made up of woolen or cotton thread.
