| The Fiesta de la Virgen de Candelaria is celebrated on February 2nd of every year. In Bolivia, it is also known as the Dark Virgin of the Lake, and the Patroness of Bolivia. It is most important pilgrimage destination in Bolivia. This annual celebration of the Virgen of Candelaria is a huge event in Puno and Copacabana, Bolivia and is also celebrated in Uruguay, Venezuela and Chile. She Fiesta de la Virgen de la Candelaria is held to honour the Virgen or the Dark Virgin of the Lake. Today the Pilgrims gather to pray and celebrate by the lake, however the serious religious atmosphere of the event is overshadowed by the parties and barbeques held to mark the occasion. In this day the People drink and dance in the streets of this normally small fishing village and shamans perform devil dances and tell fortunes while priests consecrate new cars and other blessed objects, brought from all over Bolivia, with beer. Today most of the people were celebrates colourful costumes and there are parades, music and a buoyant atmosphere in Bolivia. |
