| About Black Consciousness Day |
| Zumbi of Palmares or Black Consciousness Day is observed on November 20th of each year in Brazil. The day is marked on the anniversary of the death of Zumbi dos Palmares. He is the leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares. Palmares was a state founded by maroons, or runaway slaves, which flourished in Northeastern Brazil throughout most of the seventeenth century. The National Black Consciousness day originally called Zumbi Day in 1978. These events will certainly underscore Zumbi of Palmares's mythic status. "Zumbi" is considered a national hero and warrior, a symbol of freedom; his name became a capoeira legend. These events recorded and republished in the historical record over the last four centuries provide the epic material of Zumbi of Palmares. |
