| About Kayin New Year |
| The Kayin New Year is celebrated on January 8th of each year. It is considered a national holiday of Burma. Today they celebrated with traditional Kayin costume was worn by most of the celebrants at the event. The day’s events began with a 6am ceremony to pay respects to the flag of the Union of Myanmar and the Kayin flag. Many young and old Kayins wear their traditional colourful dresses and go around the city, visit relatives and enjoy the festival. Kayin communities throughout Burma celebrate by wearing their traditional dress of woven tunics over red longyis and by hosting folk dancing and singing performances. In Hpa An, the capital city of Kayin State, dance competitions are held every year. Many of the Kayin at the celebrations said they were proud to be wearing their traditional costume. |
