The Feast of St.Stephen, the first Christian martyr, is better known as Boxing Day. In Canada, Boxing Day is observed as a holiday, except for those in the retail business. Boxing Day and the days immediately following are when many retail stores sell their Christmas and retired model products by holding clearance sales. Boxing Day has also been referred to as the day that people "box" up their Christmas decorations and put them away until next year. Boxing Day is a public holiday. Boxing Day is the following day after Christmas Day. It is on the 26 December. It is based on the tradition of giving gifts to the less fortunate members of society. Traditionally, this was the day to open the Christmas Box to share the contents with the poor. It is a time for family and friends to gather with lots of food and fun. Outdoor sports such as soccer, horse racing and hunting are popular on this holiday. |
