About Qing Ming Jie (Ching Ming Festival)
Quing Ming Jie is the Chinese traditional and most important festival of the sacrifice. The Qing Ming Jie, Mourning Day and Ching Ming Festivals are observed on 104th day after the winter solstice, as usually occurring around the April 5th of the Gregorian calendar. It is also known as the Tomb-sweeping Day, Pure Brightness Festival, Clear Bright Festival, All Souls Day, Festival for Tending Graves or Grave Sweeping Day. The Ching Ming festival day observant customarily visit ancestral graves where traditional rites and offerings are made to honour one's ancestors. “Ching Ming" or “Remembrance of Ancestors Day” is therefore a key holiday in the Chinese calendar. This festival does have other meaning to the ancient Chinese especially for farmers. Ching Ming is an important traditional Chinese festival celebrated by the Han Clan for over 2,500 years. The Mourning Day, the ruins left by China's vast earthquake last year have become shrines for anguish and anger this week, when the nation's traditional mourning day has brought out families struggling in the aftermath of the calamity. The Qing Ming Jie is a day for families to come together spending time in reflection for those that have come before them. Qing Ming Jie is a period to remember, honour and pay respect to one's deceased ancestors and family members. The family members pray before the ancestors, sweep the tombs and offer food, tea, wine, joss sticks, and paper accessories to the departed. It is not a solemn occasion, but is a time for happy communion with the family members to show respect to their ancestors.
