| About Spirit Festival |
| The Spirit Festival is celebrated on fifteenth day of the seventh month in lunar calendar. The Spirit Festival is also called as the Ghost Festival or Yu Lan Pen Festival. It used to be a religious ceremony in India. The Buddhist would hold the Yu Lan Pen Festival in memory of their forefathers. The Ghost Festival is said to be the time when ghosts roam the world every year. Ghost festival is a popular occasion that is taken very seriously by the Chinese. It is believed by the Chinese that during this month, the gates of hell are opened to free the hungry ghosts who then wander to seek food on Earth. The Chinese believe that the dead become ghosts roaming between Heaven and earth. Spirits without descendants to care for them are prayed to during Ghost Festival so that they may also enjoy the warmth of life among the living. The reason why the Chinese celebrate this festival is to remember their dead family members and pay tribute to them. Ghost Festival has roots in the Buddhist festival of Ullambana. |
