| About Commemoration of the Martyrs of Independence |
| Commemoration of the Martyrs of Independence day is celebrated on January 4th of every year in Congo. It is a public holiday. The turning point came on January 4 1959 when the Belgian administrators took the fatal step of dispersing a large crowd of supporters gathered to attend a political meeting. A week later on January 13 the Belgian government formally recognized independence as the ultimate goal of its policies and one year later the Belgian Congo moved toward independence. This is a national holiday in Congo. |
