About National Heroes' Day
On January 17th Congo celebrates the National Heroes Day. In 1966 Patrice Lumumba's image was rehabilitated by the Mobutu regime and he was proclaimed a national hero and martyr in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He was an African anti-colonial leader and the first legally elected Prime Minister of the Republic of the Congo after he helped to win its independence from Belgium in June 1960. In 1956 he is a leader of the MNC. The MNC won a convincing majority in the December local elections in the Congo. Lumumba was born in Onalua in the Katakokombe region of the Kasai province of the Belgian Congo. He was born in 2nd July 1925 and died on 17th January 1961. So the January 17th is observed as the National Heroes Day.
