| Carnival Festivities take place across the islands and include a solemn religious ceremony celebrating the Feast of the Saint Cross. This is celebrated for the month of February of every year. The Carnival is also known as Mardi Gras. It is the most anticipated celebrations in Cape Verde. The Mindelo Carnival is famous far beyond São Vicente Island. Even in the Cape Verdean capital Praia, which is always competing with Mindelo, it is recognized that the country's second city has the best and most famous carnival. The string of stunning white-sand islands plays host each May to Carnival, when the liberation of the slaves is commemorated. This is the most famous carnival in Cape Verde. |
