| The Battle of Rivas Day is the Anniversary of victory over Confederate invaders in 1856. This is celebrated on April 11th of every year in Costa Rica. It is Republic of Costa. The Battle of Rivas Day is also known as Juan Santamaria Day. It is a national holiday. This holiday is also celebrated in Nicaragua. Juan Santamaria is a national hero of the Costa Rica. This day is held every April 11th to commemorate his death. An army consisting mainly of farmers armed with machetes forced William Walker, an American who planned to enslave Central American countries, back into Nicaragua. They forced Walker and his troops back into Nicaragua. Walker was eventually caught and shot in Honduras in 1860. In this day celebrates who died in the Battle of Rivas fighting William Walker's troops. The weeklong celebrations include parades, concerts and dancing, and of course, there is much food and drink. |
