The Independence Day is celebrated on October 1st of every year in Cyprus. It honour the day in 1960 when Cyprus gained independence from Great Britain. Cyprus became an independent country after a four year guerrilla war against the British army from the period of 1955 to 1959. The island was on the whole a colonial country of the British Empire since 1878 until October 1st of 1960. Today they celebrate their independence day with festivals at schools and communities, hosting flag and with a big military parade which take place in our capital Nicosia. Schools, offices and many shops are closed on this day. It is a public holiday of Cyprus.
