| The Green Monday is the first day of Lent for the Greek Orthodox and other Eastern churches. It is also known as Clean Monday. It is a Bank Holiday of Cyprus. This bank holiday in Cyprus will see families out and about today having picnics containing shellfish and other fasting foods and it is tradition to fly kites and playing other games. The celebrations take place in all towns and villages on the island and feature plenty of music, dancing and delicious vegetarian food. The day is filled with the spirit of Carnival and some people still wander around in fancy dress. Today families and friends gather for an outdoor vegetarian meal of bread, vegetables and olives at the start of this Orthodox festival of fasting and contemplation. |
