| About Jan Hus Day |
| Jan Hus was a Czech Catholic priest, philosopher, reformer and master at Charles University in Prague. He was burned at the stake on July 6 1415, in Prague. He was summoned to the ecclesiastical Council of Constance in 1414 where he was ordered to recant his teachings. He was famous for being burned at the stake for his heretical views on the Church. Hus was subsequently arrested and prosecuted for his heretical crimes against the church. July 6th is observed as a national holiday in the Czech Republic. He is also commemorated as a martyr in the Calendar of Saints of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America on that day. Jan Hus grew up in Bohemia during this tumultuous epoch. Today most Czechs describe themselves as non-religious and among Christians more are Roman Catholics than Hussites, nonetheless Jan Hus is a national hero.
