| About Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day |
| Czechs celebrate Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day on November 17th. It is a public holiday of Czech Republic. The date commemorates the start of the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia which marked the beginning to the end of the communist regime in the country. The November 17th tradition started in 1939 after the German Nazi occupation of the Czech lands at the beginning of World War II. In 1989 a memorial march in honor of the fiftieth anniversary of the first International Students Day was organized. It is sometimes referred to as World Students Day. This holiday celebrates the political role of students. In the days that followed, protests grew into non-violent strikes at first involving students and actors and later involving all citizens of Czechoslovakia. |
