| The Dia de la Altagracia is celebrated on January 21st of each year in Dominican Republic. It is a public holiday of Dominican Republic. It is also known as the feast of Our Lady of Altagracia. It is within the program of concerts celebrating the diocese of Higuey in honor of the spiritual mother of the Dominican people. The festival was originally held on August 15th, but was moved to January 21st to celebrate victory over the French in 1690. "Our Lady of Altagracia" is a portrait of the Virgin Mary painted in the 1500's. The portrait is kept in the Basilica of Our Lady of Altagracia in the city of Salvaleón of Higuey. they celebrate this day with candles, pictures, and statues of the Virgen. |
