| The Moroccans celebrate The Manifesto of Independence Day on January 11th to commemorate the signature of a document in 1944 by 67 prominent personalities demanding the country's independence. It is a national Holiday in Western Sahara. A manifesto of the Istiqlal Party which means Independence party in English was one of the earliest public demands for independence. On January 11, 1944, a group of nationalist Moroccans with the backing of the Late King Mohammed V signed a petition. They released this manifesto demanding full independence, national reunification, and a democratic constitution. The sultan had approved the manifesto before its submission to the French resident general. It is the most promising incident in the revolution of the independence by the Moroccan people and its king. The country gained its independence in March 1956. |
