| About Independence Day |
| February 24th is Estonia’s Independence Day. The republic was declared in 1918. This date was celebrated as the Day of Independence until the Soviet occupation of Estonia in 1940. Estonia was under Soviet rule for fifty years. On the 24th of February 1989, the red flag of Soviet Estonia, on Tompea, was replaced with blue-black-white Estonian national flag, and from that moment Independence Day is once again celebrated. On 1918 the state formed the Estonian Provisional Government. It is a public holiday. Independent Estonia finally became a reality but Estonians immediately had to take up arms in defense of their new found freedom. Every year, the US Secretary of State sent greetings on the occasion to the Ambassador of the Republic of Estonia to the United States, Ernst Jaakson. |
