| About Meskerem |
| This is the first month in the Ethiopian calendar. Meskerem is celebrated on September 11th of every year or the 12th if it's a leap year. Meskerem is also known as the New Year in Ethiopia. Today children wear new clothes, and go around the neighborhood singing. The Ethiopian calendar is seven years and eight months behind the Gregorian calendar, so September 2001 is Meskerem 1994 in Ethiopia. The way Ethiopians measure time is also different from the West. Today the children make gifts of colorful paintings or spring flowers to give to their family and friends. |
