About Victory of Adwa Day
As early as 1896, Ethiopia was the last free nation on continental Africa that was never colonized. The Victory of Adwa Day is observed on March 2nd of each year in Ethiopia. After the Battle of Adwa, Ethiopia became the First African Nation to ever win a major battle over a powerful European colonizer. The Ethiopian army led by Emperor Menelik II decisively defeated the Italian army at the Battle of Adwa. The country remained free owing to a decisive defeat of Italian invaders at Adowa on March 1st 1896. Adwa is a town located in the northern part of Ethiopia, near the Ethiopian and Eritrean border. Ethiopia became a symbol of the struggle for freedom and black intellectuals and religious leaders made pilgrimages to the country.
