The Battle of the Boyne is called in Irish as Cath na Boinne. The Battle was fought between two rival kings of English, Scottish and Irish thrones. King William deposed James in 1688. This led to the battle between the two kings and the battle was won by William and this continued his ruling in Ireland. The Battle was fought on July 1, 1690 outside the Drogheda town in Ireland’s east coast. In those days Julian calendar was followed. So, July 1 in old style Julian calendar corresponds to 12 July in modern Gregorian calendar. This symbolic important battle is best-known battle of British and Irish history. It is still commemorated today by Orange Institution. On this day the Irish men wear orange sashes and black suits and bowler hats. Protestant Irish march with drums and pipes. Orange Day celebrations are also celebrated in Birmingham and Liverpool and in some parts of Canada. |
