| About Spring Bank Holiday |
| Spring Bank Holiday is a public holiday in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Spring Bank Holiday is also known as Victoria Day in England and Wales. The spring bank holiday in the UK is commemorated each year on the last Monday of May. The Spring Bank Holiday traces its origin back to 1970s. At the beginning the spring bank holiday is the Monday after Pentecost. This is known as Whitsun or Whit Monday in the UK. After following a trail period from 1965 to 1970 and with the Banking and Financial Dealings Act in 1971, this bank holiday is moved to the last Monday in May. This day is celebrated with great enthusiasm in UK. Usually, this day is celebrated in On Cooper's Hill in Brockworth and Gloucestershire by a race down a steep hill following a large round cheese. The first person to cross the finishing line wins a Double Gloucester cheese weighing about 8lbs (around 3.5kg). In Endon in Staffordshire, on this day the villagers dress well and then a fayre i.e. a village celebration is held and crown a girl as the Well Dressing Queen. Local men hold a competition, known as 'Tossing the Sheaf', in which they compete to see who can toss a bale of straw the highest. In other places, boats are blessed, Morris dancers put on displays and local festivals are held. |
