About Emancipation Day
The Emancipation Day is celebrated as the day of abolition of slavery on the first Monday of August with different cultural activities performed by both Grenada and Carrycot. It’s a public holiday where most of the banks, schools and stores etc, are remain closed. In 1862 on April 16th compensation emancipation act was signed by President Abraham Lincoln, which marked the Anniversary of the Event in Washington DC. The Event is celebrated in Grenada spectacularly and enthusiastically with full of joy, music, dances, parades, and even there was a Display on arts and crafts. The Prime Minister of Grenada holds on a speech on the main issues of the development of the country. In 1650 Grenada was fought and conquered by the French from Caribs circa. The “Associated State of the United Kingdom”, was the status attained by the island of Grenada in 1967, which means that now the Island is solely responsible for their Internal Affairs of their country. Sir Eric Matthew Gary was the leader of the Premier and was declared to be the Grenada’s first Prime Minister. Even after getting the Independence, the slavery had not seized until the announcement of “The Emancipation Day” which made the citizens of Grenada feel to get The Total Freedom.
