About Emancipation Day
The Emancipation Day is celebrated as the day of abolition of slavery on the first Monday of August with different cultural activities performed by both Grenada and Carrycot. It’s a public holiday where most of the banks, schools and stores etc, are remain closed. In 1862 on April 16th compensation emancipation act was signed by President Abraham Lincoln, which marked the Anniversary of the Event in Washington DC. Sir Eric Matthew Gary was the leader of the Premier and was declared to be the Grenada’s first Prime Minister.
