About Day of the Virgin of Suyapa
Day of the Virgin of Suyapa is observed on February 3rd of every year. The Virgin of Suyapa is an 18th-century statue of the Virgin Mary, mother of Jesus Christ. Each February 3rd pilgrims flock to Tegucigalpa to grab a glimpse of the statue and celebrate her name day. The Virgin of Suyapa stands eight centimetres high but she is worshipped with a passion worthy of a giant. Many Hondurans believe the statue was miraculously discovered in late-January or early-February 1747 by a labourer, Alejandro Colindres. Lavish ceremonies and processions take place in honour of her saint's day on 3rd February.
