| About Saint Stephen Day |
| The Saint Stephen day is celebrated on August 20th of every year. It is a public holiday of Hungary. Saint Stephen was Grand Prince of the Hungarians and the first King of Hungary. In Hungary August 20 is observed in honour of King Stephen of Hungary, who united the country under Christianity in ad 1000 and was canonized in 1083 for his accomplishment. Stephen established a system of tithes to support churches and pastors and to relieve the poor. Out of every 10 towns one had to build a church and support a priest. Stephen died in 1038, after ruling the country for almost forty years, and was declared a saint on the 20th of August 1083. |
