| Sayyid Ruhollah Musavi Khomeini was the political and spiritual leader of the 1979 Islamic Revolution. In 1979, Khomeini led a revolutionary movement and succeeded in overthrowing the Shah regime in the country. Khomeini was considered a spiritual leader to many Shi'a Muslims, and ruled Iran from the Shah's overthrow to Khomeini's own death in 1989 as with undeniable charismatic appeal to many. Grand Ayatullah Khomeini died of Leukaemia on Saturday, June 3, 1989 at the age of 86. Iranians poured out into the cities and streets to mourn Khomeini's death in a "completely spontaneous and un-orchestrated outpouring of grief." |
