| About Icelandic National Day |
| Icelandic National Day is celebrated on June 17th of every year. On 1944, the Scandinavian country of Iceland declared full independence from the Danish crown. It is a major annual event in Iceland commonly known as National Day. This special day is celebrated all over the country with colorful marching parades and prominent people giving speeches from town and city squares. Traditionally, a woman dressed as the Fjallkonan, wearing Iceland’s most festive national dress, reads a poem. The date of 17 June was chosen because it is the birthday of Jon Sigurdsson a major figure of Icelandic culture and the leader of the 19th century Icelandic independence movement. |
