| Self-governance Day is observed on December 1st of each year in Iceland. The country has officially brought in self-rule, which many see as its latest step towards after independence from Denmark. On 1918 the Act of Union, an agreement with Denmark signed on 1 December, recognized Iceland as a fully sovereign state under the Danish king. During the last quarter of the 19th century many Icelanders immigrated to North America, mainly Canada, in search of better living conditions. |
