Respect for the Aged Day is a Japanese holiday celebrated annually to respect elders. It is like grandparent’s day in other countries. It was locally called as Keiro no Hi, or Respect-for-the-Aged Day. It was elderly called Toshiyori no Hi, or old people's day, its name was changed in 1966, celebrated on September 15. From 2003, it is held on third Monday of September due to the Happy Monday System. It was observed as Old Folks Day, which was announced on September 15. Although there are no customs particularly with this day, cultural programs athletic events are observed on this day. Japan has longest life expectancy; the average life expectancy was 76.36yrs for men and 82.84 yrs for women, according to the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Japan occupies second place due to large population. On this special day, Japanese show respect and pray for their health. |
