| The Emperor’s Birthday is a national holiday in the Japanese calendar and celebrated on 23rd December. It was called Tenchosetsu before the World War II and after it was called as Tenno tanjobi or “The Emperor’s Birthday”. The Emperor is referred to as “Regining Emperor”. Akihito is the eldest son and the fifth child of Emperor Showa. Crown Prince Akihito represented Japan at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. The Emperor and Empress of Japan have made official visits to eighteen countries, as well as all forty-seven Prefectures of Japan. Banners, flags, well wishes, and a special address by the Emperor himself usually mark the occasion. The national holiday, called tenno no tanjobi, changes to celebrate the birthday of each new Emperor who "rules." |
