About Liberation Day
The State of Kuwait is situated in the Northeast of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia. The Bani Utbah tribe was the first settlers and laid the foundation of the emirate. Kuwait gained its independence from the United Kingdom in 1961. Kuwait is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. The Kuwait city is the country’s political and economic capital. Liberation Day is often a public holiday that marks the liberation of a place, similar to an independence day. The Kuwait declared its Liberation Day on 16th February. A day celebrated by all its citizens to pay tribute to the war heroes, prisoners of war and the family members and loved ones who lost their lives during the Iraqi Invasion as well as during liberation of Kuwait. This follows Kuwait’s Independence Day that falls on 25th February. The Liberation Day marks the end of the Iraqi occupation of the country which began from August 1990. During this day the celebrations are held with public gatherings and get-togethers all over the Kuwaitis. The flag of free Kuwait was raised in celebration, and people gathered in groups enjoying their long lost freedom. The flag of Kuwait is raised, and the Kuwaitis gathered together congratulate each other, wave flags and dance in streets. Liberation Day at Kuwait is also the day of remembering those thousands of people who lost their lives while resisting the Iraqis.
