| William Vacanarat Shadrach was a Liberian politician. He was President of Liberia from 1944 to 1971. He is the father of modern Liberia. He was born on November 29, 1895 in Harper, Liberia. Tubman's father is Reverend Alexander Tubman who was general in the Liberian army and a former Speaker of the Liberian House of Representatives. His father and his family sleep on the floor because beds were too soft and therefore "degrading to character development”. In 1923, he was elected to Senate of Liberia. He fought for constitutional rights for the Liberian majority. In 1959, Tubman organized the Second Conference of African States. The economic success for Liberia allowed Tubman to begin its modernization. He died in 1971 in London clinic. He was succeeded as President by his long-time. |
