The main Independence Day is February 16, which celebrates the day in 1918 that the Council of Lithuania declared itself finally independent of both Russia and Germany during the chaos of World War I and the Russian Revolution. In 1918, Lithuania is re-established from its independence from Soviet Russia. It is called restoration of independence to Lithuania. After decades of struggle, mass demonstrations, nation-wide strikes, and courageous referendum votes for freedom, on March 11, 1990, the citizens of Lithuania finally achieved the restoration of their free, independent and democratic nation as declared in 1918. |
