The Islamic New Year is a cultural event which Muslims observe on the first day of Muharram. Muharram is widely observed as the Islamic new year day in majority of the Muslim nations world over. According to Islamic calendar it is observed in the first month. In many areas of Muslim population celebrated, and to exchange cards and gifts. For Shia Muslims, it is the day that the death of Imam Hussain, who was born on 3rd Shabaan, 4th year of Hijri. Ras al-Sana is the Islamic celebration of the new Hijri Year, is to mark the start of new Gregorian Year. They commemorate the Battle of Karbala and observe it as a month of mourning, and ends on the tenth day of Muharram called Ashurah. Sunni Muslims do not take part in the New Year traditions as on this day caliph Abu Bakr died. Muharram is an important day for the Shias. Many males beat their chests or walk barefoot over the burning coal to remember the sufferings of Hussain. Later, food and other things of survival are distributed to the poor. Islam has a lunar based calendar with 354 days. Islamic Calendar is 11days shorter than the solar calendar. People welcome the New Year with peace and prayers. Muslims celebrate this day to pay homage to Prophet Muhammad. Islamic New Year tradition is mostly on the lines of spiritual oneness with Allah. Young and aged Muslim fellows gather together at the different 'Idgahs' where people offer 'namaz' and special prayers are held for prosperous and happy days ahead.
