About Ascension
In Monaco Ascension is celebrated on 21 May annually. Jesus appeared before his disciples and gathered them to tell them to baptize and spread the good word. Jesus ascension is observed on a Thursday, exactly forty days after Easter Sunday. Depending upon the phases of the moon, it is celebrated in the West between April 30 and June 03. Ascension Day marks the end of the Easter season. The three Rogation days that precede Ascension Day were once days of fasting. The three Rogation days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The name was derived from the Latin word "rogare" which means "to ask". Rogation Sunday is now called simply the Fifth Sunday of Easter. "In Roman Catholicism the Ascension of the Lord is a Holy Day of Obligation. In the Eastern Orthodox Church the Ascension is one of twelve Great Feasts". Any rain on this day was regarded as falling "straight from a Heaven opened for Christ's entry" and was believed to have curative powers. Water taken from wells on this day was also considered magical. It was often mixed with sugar and licorice for children to drink. The Ascension is one of the great feasts in the Christian liturgical calendar, and commemorates the Ascension of Jesus Christ into Heaven forty days after His resurrection from the dead. The event is recorded in the New Testament. Ascension Day is always a Thursday. It is commemorated on the subsequent Sunday. In some countries, it is a public holiday. The term is also used to refer to the disappearances into heaven of Enoch and Elijah.
