| Independence Day is celebrated on 26th July according to the calendar of Maldives National Festival. The celebration begins with a parade past by the National Security Service and the National Cadet Corps, followed by the modern drills, traditional dance and drills performed by the children and youth of different schools and colleges. It is the most important date for Maldives. It is a national holiday in Maldives. The day celebrates with processions and performances which is a mixture of both traditional values and modern theme and ends with entertaining and fun loving night out. Every individual celebrates this national holiday both in national and community level. The National Security Services parade through the streets and hundreds of school children perform traditional dances and modern drills. Most of the festivals and events are based on the lunar calendar and their dates changed from year to year. People decorate their houses with lights and feats are often prepared on a grand scale. It is an annual celebration remembers the anniversary of a nation’s assumption of independent statehood. The highlights of the celebrations usually take place around Republic Square, which can be identified by the enormous flag flying in it. |
