About National Day
The National Day is celebrating on the 1st of Rabee ul Awwal, the third month in the Islamic Calendar i.e., in march. It remembers the great victory of Mohamed Thakurufaanu over the Portuguese in 1573.it is celebrating the democracy of the Maldivian Hero, Mohamed Thakurufaanu, who fought the Portuguese occupation in the 16th Century. In 1558, Portuguese attacked Maldives and killed the Sultan of this country and established their own rule. Later in 1573; Muhammad Thakurufaanu arrived here along with his companions and succeeded in ending the fifteen-year colonial rule. Maldives obtained independence from Britain and in 1968. Parades and root marches take place on the streets of Male, Parties are also held during the night, when locals and tourists share the enjoyment of food and cocktails, which are elements of a good time. In 38 years, the Maldives have seen only two Presidents, although recently, political restrictions have loosened.
