| About Flag Day |
| Dia de la Bandera is a national holiday in Mexico and it is also known as Flag Day. It is celebrated on February 24 of each year after its implementation in 1937. The Mexico flag is designed with two additional vertical stripes, one green to the far left and the other red are positioned to the far right. Green is for hope and victory. White is for the purity of our ideals. Red is for the blood our national heroes shed. In the center of the flag is a design of an eagle, perched on a cactus eating a snake. The cactus in on an island in a lake, and beneath is a garland of green leaves and a red, white and green ribbon. Since 1821 there have actually been eight flags used in Mexico. These colors were selected by the Mexican government after its independence from Spain during the War of Independence. The First National Flag was created in 1821 and the current Mexican Flag was adopted in 1968. It is a special day that families can get together and celebrate their pride in their country. |
