| Mali, officially the Republic of Mali, is a landlocked nation in Western Africa. Mali is the seventh largest country in Africa. The Sudanese Republic and Senegal became independent of France in 1960 as the Mali Federation. When Senegal withdrew after only a few months, what formerly made up the Sudanese Republic was renamed Mali. President Alpha KONARE won Mali's first democratic presidential election in 1992 and was re-elected in 1997. Most of Mali's people belong to Muslim religion. The official and most common language of those people is French. Mali is among the poorest countries in the world. |
