| Anniversary of Soufriere Hills Volcano Eruption is celebrated on 18th of July annually. Soufriere Hills volcano sits on the north flank of the older South Soufriere Hills volcano, located at the south end of Montserrat Island. The summit area consists primarily of a series of ESE-trending lava domes. The Soufrière Hills volcano is an active complex stratovolcano with many lava domes, located in Montserrat. After the democracy it became active. Its eruptions destroy the capital city Plymouth. Lavas on Montserrat in general contain 50-63 percent SiO2. A large eruption is occurred on June 15, 1997. The island’s airport was directly in the path of main pyroclastic flow and was completely destroyed. The volcano is andesitic in nature and the current pattern of activity includes periods of dome growth. On December 24, 2006, streaks of red from the pyroclastic flows became visible. On January 8, 2007, an evacuation order was issued for areas in the Lower Belham Valley. The volcano has become one of the most closely monitored volcanoes in the world since its eruption began. |
