About Maha Shivratree
Maha Shivratree is one of the most auspicious festivals of Hindus and it will be celebrated all over in India and Mauritius. It falls on the 13th night or 14th day in the Krishna Paksha of the month of Phalguna as per Hindu calendar. It is celebrated in the temples all over India. This festival mainly celebrated at night. On the day devotees take fast for the complete day and offers milk bath and bael leaves to the Lingam. It is celebrated in Mauritius by a pilgrimage to “Grand Basin“, a natural lake on the central plateau, The pilgrims dressed in white proceed to Grand Basin carrying bamboo contraption on their shoulders as a sign of sacrifice. It is a public holiday in Mauritius; it is one of the largest Hindu celebrations outside of India. The date selected for Maha Shivratri is taken from the lunar calendar, falls upon a different date each year. There is a special arch called the Kanwar that is made from wood and ornamented with flowers, small mirrors, and paper decorations. It is observed in the honor of the Hindu Lord Shiva who was married to Parvati on this particular day.
