| John Chilembwe was an orthodox Baptist educator born in 1871. John Chilembwe Day is observed annually on January 15 in Malawi, is celebrated as a hero for Independence. He was educated and established a mission known as Zambezi Industrial Mission. In 1897 he visit Lynchburg, Virginia and attend to a seminar in Virginia Theological College. He also founded Providence Industrial Mission around 1900s. He tried to instill the values of hard-work, self-respect and self-help in his community. The rural churches and schools were down which established by Chilembwe. Chilembwe was fight for Britain in Tanzania against the Germans in World War I. According to the orders of Chilembwe several African workers were killed, but they did not harm any women or children. Chilembwe was killed by officials on February 3, 1915. Malawi gained independence in 1964. Malawians go on a national holiday. |
