| Gawai Day pr Gawai Dayak is a festival celebrated in Sarawak on 1st June annually. It is the religious as well as social occasion. The word Gawai means a ritual or festival whereas Dayak is a collective name for the native ethnic groups of Sarawak. Gawai Dayak literally means "Dayak Festival". On this day, visit their friends and relatives, is known as ‘ngabang’. Tuak which is known as rice wine is brewed and traditional delicacies like penganan known as cakes from rice flour, sugar and coconut milk are prepared. The celebration starts on the evening of 31st May. It starts with a ceremony called Muai Antu Rua. Once the offering ceremony is done, dinner is then served at the ruai. Tha Gawai Dayak festival is held every year in the month of June. The Gawai Dayak festival in Sarawak, Malaysia is actually a celebration of good harvest. On this day the Malaysians celebrate the festival drink and dance together. The festivities start right from the end of May and continue till the middle of the July. Malaysians wear the traditional dress, the elders perform the traditional rituals, taken ample food and drink, Tuak, wine (made form rice) and wide variety of other food items are served. The harvest festival is celebrated on every second weekend of May. The Gawai festival is one of the celebrated festival in Sarawak. |
