| About Thaipusam |
| Thaipusam is a Hindu festival celebrated by the Tamil community on the full month in the Tamil month of Thai. It is also referred to as Thaipooyam in Malayalam language. Pusam refers to a star that is at its highest point during the festival. This festival is celebrated because of the birthday of Murugan popularly known as Subramaniam, youngest son of Shiva and Parvati. Skanda was created during one of the battles between the Asuras and the Devas. Kavadi Attam is a dance performed by the devotees during the ceremonial worship of Murugan, performed during the festival of Thaipusam. The simplest kavadi is a semi circular decorated canopy supported by a wooden rod that is carried on the shoulders, to the temple; some are to tongue or a spear through the cheeks. Other types of Kavadi involve hooks stuck into the back. The greater the pain the more god-earned merit. The largest Thaipusam celebrations take place in Singapore, Mauritius and Malaysia. In Malaysia, it is celebrated on 8th February, annually. It is a public holiday in Malaysia, including several countries in the world. The Temple at Kuala Lumpur attracts million devotees and thousands of tourists. The procession to the caves starts at the Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Kuala Lumpur in the heart of the city. A fire walking ceremony is also demonstrated in some temples. |
