| Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day on May 29. It commemorates the return of democracy in Nigeria after 16 years of military rule. It is also known as Freedom Day. Every state chooses its own way of making occasion. On October 1, 1960 Nigeria gained its Independence. It is now a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. In 1980’s Nigeria was considered an exemplar of African democracy and economic well-being. The military again seized power in 1984. In 1999, free presidential elections led to an overwhelming victory of General Olusegun Obasanjo. On May 29, 1999 Olusegun Obasanjo seated as President of Nigeria in his office. On this occasion the people of Nigeria celebrate the Democracy Day of Nigeria every year. It is a national holiday in Nigeria.
