| On 4 April Ghode Jatra is celebrates in Nepal. Ghode Jatra is the Horse Racing Day falls on the month of mid March or early April. A grand horse parade takes place at Tundikhel, largest play ground in Asia. In olden days the Kings of Kathmandu use to go to worship the Bhadrakali temple. This visit is modified into the parade of horses and is also the horse athletics and racing contest. It was the festival considered only for the residents of Kathmandu. This festival was held to celebrate the victory over a demon named Tundi, known as Tundikhel. The swift running of the horses on this day is also considered to be a good omen for the Nepalese people. The most worshiped goddess on this day in Bhadrakali also known by the Newari people as Lumarhi Devi. The horse parade is a big attraction and people always look forward to it. Also today, army soldiers perform various equestrian feats in pony race, charger race, show jump, tent pegging, handkerchief picking, coach dressage, drill ride, vaulting and Hungarian Post, mixed jump and fire jump among others. |
