| About Rashtriya Prajatantra Divas |
| In Nepal the Democracy Movement is held in 2006. It is the political agitation against the rule of King Gynaendra of Nepal. The movement is also referred to as Jana Andolan-II means that people’s movement, continuation of the 1990 Jana Andolan. The Seven Party Alliance (SPA) was established and dissolved parliament by the opposition leaders of Nepal. In December SPA signed on 12 point understanding with the Maoists. SPA launched agitation programmes around the country in 2006. The agitations reached to a peak in municipal elections which were boycotted by the Maoists. King Gyanendra announced that he would return political power to the people and called for elections to be held as soon as possible. When King Gyanendra removed Sher Bahadur Deuba from office and dissolved the Nepalese Parliament indefinitely. The leaders of SPA met in the capital and staked out three demands: reinstitution of the old parliament; formation of an all-party government; and elections to a Constituent Assembly that will draft a new constitution. Under the leader ship of the Girija Prasad Koirala, the SPA accepted the reinstitution of Parliament. But the Moist demand the formation of a Constituent Assembly and abolition of the monarchy. On May 1, Bhattarai announced that one should respect the result of the elections, if the elections are free and fair. Hence the Maoist signed on acceptance of the democratic process.
So on 19 February, the Nepalese celebrate ‘Rashtriya Prajatantra Divas’, well known as ‘National Democracy Day’. |
