About Constitution of the Slovak Republic
ON SEPTEMBER 1, Slovakia celebrated the national holiday of Constitution Day to commemorate the 14th anniversary of the adoption of the country's Constitution. The document was adopted by the Slovak parliament on September 1, 1992, establishing the independent Slovak Republic. Parliament debated the draft on August 31 and September 1, and following a demonstrative walkout by MPs representing the Hungarian minority, the legislature held an open vote on the final text. Of the 134 MPs present in the 150-seat chamber, 114 voted for the draft, while 16 were against, including MPs for the Christian Democratic Movement, and four MPs abstained.
